Interpreting

Techniques: Simultaneous, Consecutive and Whispering (Chuchotage)

Simultaneous interpreting:

The interpreter conveys the original speech nearly simultaneously into another language. This technique guarantees an immediate communication of information for all participants.

Appropriate for international conferences, as the information can be transmitted nearly simultaneously and into an unlimited number of different languages.

Consecutive interpreting:

The speaker divides his speech into small segments (a few sentences or several minutes in length). The interpreter takes notes with a special note-taking system and transmits the original speech with a time-lag into the target language based on his notes and memory.

Appropriate for official events or meetings in small groups.

Whispered interpreting (Chuchotage):

The interpreter is seated or staning among the addressees and whispers the information directly into the ear. In case of larger groups, the interpreter may use a tour guide system with a microphone. Whispered interpreting is often used instead of consecutive interpreting in order to save time.

Appropriate for guided visits, as this technique guarantees a high mobility.
